Have you ever heard of someone bragging about how little they paid for an engagement ring? Probably not. We know you want to get the best value when buying an engagement ring, and then let others think you spent a fortune! But how? The average cost of a one-carat diamond engagement ring is around $4,500 to $6,000 and it’s not exactly something you can cut out coupons from the local Buffalo newspaper for and score a deal. Engagement rings are a big investment, just like the relationship they signify.

The jewelry experts from Ben Garelick in Buffalo, New York have the inside scoop on how to get the best value buying an engagement ring. These experts have worked with countless couples to find the perfect ring, and they know that purchasing an engagement ring is one of the biggest expenses you will have in your lifetime.

When Buying An Engagement Ring, Know The 5 C’s

The jewelry experts say to know the five basic C’s and focus on them when going to buy an engagement ring. The five C’s are carat, color, clarity, cut, and the newest addition, country of origin. These five qualities go hand-in-hand to determine the overall value of your engagement ring.

For some people, the color of the diamond may be more important to them when compared to the clarity of the diamond. While all five C’s are important in the makeup of your engagement ring, the individual buyer has the freedom to decide which C is more valuable to them. And depending on whether you are purchasing a large diamond solitaire ring or a three-stone diamond ring with smaller diamonds, which is most important can change. Understanding the five C’s while shopping for your engagement ring will help you to get the best value.

Carat - The Diamonds Measure And Weight

A carat is the standard unit of measurement for diamonds. The size of the diamond is important and has a huge impact on what the cost of the ring will be. Diamond prices jump at half and full carat weights. If you are looking to save money and want a larger diamond, you could get a high 90s carat diamond and the price would be significantly less than a one-carat diamond - plus you won’t even be able to tell the difference.

Cut - The Diamonds Shape And Shine

The Ben Garelick experts would argue that the cut of the diamond is the most important C. The cut determines the diamonds shape and how much sparkle and shine the diamond will have.

Even if you have purchased a large diamond, if it is poorly cut, it won’t sparkle and dance with the light. The experts at Ben Garelick hand-select their diamonds to ensure the finest, most sparkling cuts, so your diamond will look like a million bucks!

Clarity - The Diamonds Imperfections

The clarity of a diamond is categorized from flawless (FL) to included (I). Most of the time people purchase diamonds with small inclusions (SI) or very very small inclusion (VVS) - which offer the better deal. You can’t see SI or VVS without a microscope and those diamonds run for less than a flawless diamond. Clarity is a real opportunity to save money on a diamond. SI2 in clarity is the lowest clarity you can go where you can’t see any of the inclusions with your naked eye (you need a 10 power loupe or magnifying glass) to see them inside the diamond. Any time you go up on clarity, you add about 10-20% in price. At Ben Garelick, we are very stringent when we pick our SI2’s so they are even cleaner than your typical SI2’s that you see in other jewelry stores or online. If you cannot see any inclusions inside the diamond, then it’s best to put your money into color, carat weight and cut (which gives the diamond its sparkle and scintillation) - things you can see! Or keep those hard-earned dollars in your pocket!

Color - The Diamonds Grading Scale

The color of a diamond ranges from colorless (D) to yellow (Z). Most diamonds are colorless or nearly colorless, falling between G and J on the color scale. The D diamonds are very rare and, because of their rarity, they can command a higher price. Moving down on the color scale toward G & H allows you to buy a diamond that still appears white and will be more affordable.

Country of Origin - The Diamond’s Background

There’s a new “C” on the block brought to the diamond grading mix for natural diamonds by the Gemological Institute of America, Inc. Country of origin was recently added to the information buyers may consider when making a diamond purchase. With country of origin information, buyers can discover where the diamond originated as well as the benefits that diamonds bring to the people where they were mined.
